What information does a DEXA give?
You will receive printouts including % body fat, pounds of fat, pounds of lean tissue, % fat in two midsection areas (android and gynoid), a segmental body composition breakdown, and total bone density information.
Is there a weight and height limit for a DEXA scan?
There is a weight limit of 350 pounds and a height limit of 6’5”
How long is a DEXA scan?
The scan is about 6-7 minutes in length.
Does the DEXA scan measure visceral fat (VAT)?
Our machine in Chapel Hill provides this reading, but those in Arlington and Tampa do not. All machine provide a reading for android fat, which is a combination of visceral and subcutaneous fat.
What information does a RMR test give?
A RMR test measures the number of calories your body burns in a day at rest. This can be combined with active calories burned to help determine how many calories you need in a day to reach your specific goals.
How long is the RMR?
The RMR is 10-15 minutes in length.
What do I wear for a DEXA scan?
You will be asked to remove metal for the scan. Please come in comfortable clothes.
Do I need to be fasted for a DEXA scan?
You do not need to be fasted for a DEXA scan. If you choose to be fasted, we recommend that you repeat that for any follow-up scans as well.
How often should I get a DEXA scan?
This depends on the person and their unique goals. Typically, 3 months between scans is enough time to measure considerable changes.
Does the DEXA give a bone density reading?
You will receive a total bone density reading. If you are looking for specific sites on the body, we suggest going to a hospital for a bone density-specific scan.
How do I prepare for my RMR test?
Please be fasted for a minimum of 4 hours and do not have caffeine or exercise before the test.
How often should I get a RMR test done?
A RMR test should be completed again after 6 months-1 year from the initial test or if you have increased lean mass considerably.
